With job growth predicted to be at a whopping 19 percent (faster than average,) more than half a million new jobs could be created during this time period.
By earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, an RN's potential for salary and advancement are generally improved over RNs with an associate's degree or diploma. According to a 2014 survey conducted by The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), the average staff nurse earns $67,800 ($400 more than in 2013), and the average director/VP/assistant director of nursing earns $110,700 ($1,200 more than in 2013, but $1,200 less than 2012). Part of the difference in salary across titles is explained by the difference in the percentage of time spent in direct patient care versus the percentage of time spent on other tasks, such as management or administration.
According to the 2014 survey, the percentage of registered nurses with bachelor's degrees who held advanced positions, such as nurse manager, director, or administrator, was higher than that of those with diplomas or associate's degrees. These titles usually translate to higher salaries.
Mean annual wages for registered nurses in 2014 were $69,790, or $33.55 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
