LPN, RN, NP: What's the difference?

Three basic kinds of nurses each have their own training requirements, scope of practice and advancement potentials:

  • LPNs or LVNs usually complete a year-long certification and practice under the supervision of RNs or physicians.
  • RNs typically complete a two-year associate degree or a bachelor's degree in nursing. A BSN is often required for career advancement to leadership or administrative positions.
  • Nurse practitioners or advance practice RNs generally hold a BSN and a master's degree in nursing.
